The history of the Crafts House started in 1859 when the original Crafts House School building was built by a philanthropic lawyer, poet, and SC State Congressman named William Crafts. As a Harvard University graduate who loved learning, he advocated for free public education. He set out and purchased the property at the corner of the current Queen and Legare Streets, and it was there he built his first school, designed by Edward C. Jones, in 1859. However, it was called the Friend Street School after the road's original name. Then during the Civil War in 1861, the building burned in a fire. Then in 1881, two Architects Abrahams & Seyle were commissioned to replace the school with the Gothic Revival Building that mimics the style of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist just across the street. In 1915, a three-story wing was added by David Hyer to the rear of the building. After that addition, the Crafts School had 14 classrooms and accommodated over 1200 students serving the area's children until the late 1970s. The city sold the property in the early 1980's when it was developed into Luxury Condos.
The Building recently completed $775,000 of renovations to the exterior and interior. There are no assessments at this time and the building is well maintained regularly. Recent work included:
